Books Books Books
Carrie and I took a trip to the Seattle Public Library Book Sale on Saturday. It was amazing! Thousands of books loaded in boxes and crammed in this huge warehouse. I mostly kept to the hardcover fiction. At one point I ventured into the kids section but quickly aborted that effort when I got a look at the crazed parents and countless baby strollers. Every book was one dollar and I told myself I could only spend $20. But, not being prepared for the spectacle, I only had the stamina to spend $10...alas. Now I am more prepared for the Fall sale.
Here's my loot...
I'm not sure who loves the books more...

Spernit Humum
A few months ago, Jessica and I found a beret in the lost and found that had a strange pin on it. It was the image of a cat with writing around it. Given that it was stamped in silver it seemed not unusual that the writing would be difficult to read. Still, imagine our surprise after typing the phrase into Google and discovering "touch not the cat bot a glove" was actually what it said.
We were redirected to http://www.celticstudio.com/celticstudio/database/clans/MOTTOS.HTM where we found that "touch no the cat bot a glove" means "touch not the cat without a glove" and is the motto of the Macintosh and McPherson clans. Further investigation had us giggling at other fabulous mottos like "victoria non proeda" which is "victory, not booty" and "over fork over" which, oddly, actually translates to "over fork over".
There's also the business minded Sempill Clan with "keep the appointed meeting", the apparently half-rooster Cockburn Clan with, "he rouses up by crowing". And my personal favorite, the Charmicheal and Ian Mhoir Clans who are "always ready", and the Murray clan, that is merely "quite ready".
Take a look and see which clan you belong to. I am clearly of the Kerr Clan..."sero sed serio", "late but in earnest".

Curious about my push-up progress? Jazzed about my juggling journey?
(Alarmed by my Artless Alliteration?)
I've been on the injured reserve lately. I tweaked my arm somehow and am not really sure what I did. Of course, it's hard to tell given the recent flurry of activity I've subjected my arm to...here's a list, I'll let you decide...
-juggling
-push-ups
-carrying a 30 lb bag of cat food home from the grocery store
-crazy book shelving habits (The other day I had 15 minutes to shelve an entire cart. When I was done I called myself a "a shelving whirlwind, a champion of order!")
-a pinched nerve from being over-boastful (see above)
-the cartwheel I tried last Thursday (I was unsuccessful)
-sleeping on it wrong
-extended play sessions with the new toy I bought the cats
-holding up Jonathon Strange & Mr. Norrell while reading in bed
-aggressive crocheting
-cat presses (it's a bench press but instead of a bar I use Brody)
I wonder if my insurance will cover any of these?

Vocabulary with Kim
Kim taught me a word she invented which I think is quite delightful. Mangry. It's a cross between mad and angry. Say it out loud with me... Mangry. Isn't that lovely? Let's all add it to our Word spellchecker.
On another word related note. Kim also told me that Will Ferrell popularized the term ginormous. When I started hearing that word being used by people other than my friends, I as a little put out. I had been using it so long, I felt that I had somehow invented it. But Kim insists that the man who brought us Frank the Tank is the true wordsmith...and I quote, "It's a word now. Webster put it in his diary." Well if it's in Webster's Diary, it must be a word. Hearts, Kim!

This Stinks!
Today the bathroom at work smelled alternately of, Fruity Pebbles, scratch n' sniff stickers, and the inside of my plastic pumpkin that I used to collect candy on Halloween. Altogether, a rather nostalgic day in the toilets.

What's My Type?
My Favorite Bus Driver
When riding the bus home from work on Monday nights, there used to be a lovely, lovely bus driver. He's an older gentleman who always wears a powder blue baseball cap. He was always very nice, and then one day I left my phone on the bus. After much worrying, and guessing it was gone forever and phone calling and trekking to the Metro lost and found, I got my phone back. The next Monday while riding the bus home, we were waiting at the Northgate Transit center, and the bus driver got up and walked back to me. For a split second, for some silly reason, I thought he was going to tell me to get off, but he was only asking if I had my phone back. He had found it the week before, and turned it in for me, and best of all he remembered me. I thanked him over and over. Even when I got off the bus I said, "Thank you again for my phone."
He was delighted.
After that we had a special bus driver/rider bond, that spilled over to my coworker Chris who also rides that bus. He was always so happy to see us, and would never let us swipe our bus passes, he would just wave us on like old friends. And when I would get off the bus he would always say, "There you go." It's silly, but it made me smile.
One night, the bakery at work had extra pastries, so I took one to give to the bus driver. He was so happy and he told me how nice I was and that he loved me and and when I got off the bus that night he clasped my hand and said thank you in such a heartfelt way.
And then he was gone.
I was heartbroken. It's silly to be so attached, but there was something so lovely about a little personal connection on a normally impersonal transaction. I find the bus a wonderful conveniece, but a little sad. Here are these drivers who take me to work and home again every day, and I don't know them, they don't know me. It just seems so strange. Think about it in terms of your neighborhood bar or restaurant. After going there long enough you establish a repoire with the staff, "You want the usual?", I just want the same thing with my bus drivers.
It had been months since the last time I saw my bus driver, and then last week, I climbed on a bus that I normally don't ride, to meet Carrie and some friends for dinner. And there he was! I didn't even realize it was him until I had already paid and walked past. But when I sat down, he was looking at me in his mirror and waving. When I was getting off he was asked me where I had been, and told me when he drives that route he is always looking for me. I told him I ride the same times and he was the one that was missing. Oh, I was so happy to see him again! When I finally met up with Carrie that night she asked me how my bus ride had been and she was a little taken aback by my exclamation of, "Wonderful!"
I had to work tonight, a night I don't normally, and there he was again. My lovely, (to use Christy's phrase) dear, bus driver. I don't say much to him, I just sit on the bus and read, but still when I got off tonight, he squeezed my hand and told me how nice it was to see me.

It's Going to Be a Long, Loooong Week
Today is one of those days where I wonder why on earth I want to go to law school to try and make the world a better place when all it's filled with is people; lots, and lots of idiot people.
I'm a Failure
I have put forth a paltry and puny performance pertaining to my push-up program. I started this 6-week program on February 17th. I should be done by now, and able to do my 100 push-ups, but I'm only on week 4 and with each additional day of the program I think it less likely that I will be able to do 100. Keep in mind, I am only doing so-called "girl" push-ups and even then, I have to do some of the days over. I know I'm getting stronger, because I am doing way more than when I started. But even so...why can't I do my 100 now? whine.
Drum Boogie!
I've been watching a lot of classic movies lately. And I've decided that if I could be reincarnated backwards, I would be born again as Barbara Stanwyck. Or at least her characters. I love her. She's so rough and tumble, street wise and sexy. She's my new idol. My top picks as of now...Meet John Doe, and Ball of Fire. But I'm watching Double Indemnity later this weekend so we could have a new front runner.
